Tony Jefferson - Simple Swarm Measures - Thorne Beehives - Rand Open Day 2023
Переглядів 3495 місяців тому
Tony will do a practical talk and demonstration, using Thornes hive parts and the twinstock hive, on simplifying the mysteries artificial swarming - for those who cannot remember all the daft words given to various swarming procedures. Especially useful when you find umpteen queen cells in your colony and can't remember what to do. Keeping things simple is the aim. So it is basically "demystify...

He will describe why he went down the chemical free route, some of the implications for our bees and beekeeping of using varroacides, current thinking on how it might work and what the research says about the use of small cell within beekeeping. John will show you how you could introduce this practice...
John White - Checkerboarding - Thorne Beehives - Rand Open Day 2023
Переглядів 1385 місяців тому
Checkerboarding is a fascinating method of avoiding swarming without intervening in the brood. It has been used by a small minority of beekeepers in the USA (for the last 25 years) and the UK (6 years) with some surprising fringe aspects. It is a truly low intervention form of beekeeping. There is no need to go into the brood box to check for swarm preparation throughout the season. It is a one...

    I like the idea of these. You need a template so that all your boxes can be interchanged with others. Otherwise the latches won’t align unless you use the exact same boxes in the exact same order

  • @davidbowden8362

    The additional width on the top bar seems pointless, frames fail at the ends rather than in the center. Just my experience as a bee keeper.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives 5 місяців тому

      If you are using Manleys or 14"x12" then the stronger, wider top bars are quite important.

    500ml does 100 slots at 5ml/slot. So for one hive thats 10 slots which is 3.5g in 50ml of water. The powder keeps but the liquid don't.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives 7 місяців тому

      Yes that is true for a large colony. However you only need to treat the seams where there are bees present. So sometimes (like the hive I have just done in my garden) you will use less than 100ml per colony because you don't have bees on all frames.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives 7 місяців тому

      English sections are split on one side. Irish sections are split on three sides. If you use Iriahs sections you should use a 4 section length of wax.

    I am very keen on the idea of using the vapouriser on the top. I worry about the hot vapuriser resting on the top of the frames andburningthe frames. would it be a wise idea to have some sort of insulation material placed on the top of the frames where the vapourise would rest.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives 10 місяців тому

      It would certainly use something. Whether it is a thick piece of foil or a sliver of wood. The frames shoujldn't burn but they may be scored a little on top with no precautions.

    on the packet (bought from Thornes) it says "1 strip every 7 days for each beehive. complete treatment 4 strips for each beehive." this is twice the dose and different from your video. the ones I got are Lot 080323 exp 04/2025. Can you comment on this discrepancy. I dont like deviating from instructions on the packet, but 4 strips per hive effectively makes it twice the cost that you indicate on website and on this video

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives 11 місяців тому

      Not sure where the contradiction is. One strip every 7 days is correct. Although you should break the strip into 2 or 3 to be most effective

      @@conallflickr I agree, the video could be clearer on dosage. It didn't say put the second block on after a week. Seems strange to have 2 blocks in a pack when the dosage is 4 blocks

  • @MotionArtist3D
    @MotionArtist3D Рік тому

    Great explanation and really appreciate it. I wish though that Thornes also offered top bars that are *FLAT* similar to "one piece bottom bars" without the additional 'wall' sticking out. Not only this uses less wood but also quicker to manufacture and very useful for those beekeepers who prefer to use wire to hold foundation wax inside the frame instead of covering the entirety of the frame with wax. I have been trimming those 'walls' off, on my table saw for years for the beekeeper I've been helping. This also makes a lot of sense in practical terms specially when you are cleaning and old brood frame with wax and all as there are no obstacles to work around.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment. I am not entirely sure what you mean by the wall. I don't think we have ever been asked for flat top bars before - however we can do most things so anything is possible!

    • @MotionArtist3D
      @MotionArtist3D Рік тому

      @@ThorneBeehives Thank you for your kind reply. The "wall" I am talking about is that part of the bottom bar that runs through the entirety of the piece and sticks out (about 10 mm) at a 90 degree angle where the foundation wax is rested upon. This is the part I've been trimming off as I stated previously and without it, it is lot easier to clean a brood frame by running a knife from one end to the other. You have not been asked this before because the beekeeper I've been helping couldn't be bothered to ask you and because he had me to do it for him all these years. (Not anymore)! And Yes, would be awesome if you could offer "Flat top bars" just like the bottoms as well. Thank You! 🙏

    Really helpful video, thank you Rebecca. Frame sizing and format can be very confusing for us beginners; this makes it much clearer. I did notice (3:53) that the bee space of the the DN1 and DN4 (Hoffman) appear to be different, despite both being a 22mm top bar width. Is it the case that Hoffman bee space is narrower, or is it an optical illusion?

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives Рік тому

      Hoffman in the UK were standardized to 13/8” or 35mm to come in not line with most other countries. Originally though, they were 1 15/32” or just under inch and a half, which is what a NPE measures

    ENTRANCE BLOCK ; Nailing it in is inflexbile. Just have it sitting there is a pain. (Try to get it out and you'll just poke it in more.) So drill two holes just inside the entrance (on either side) and pop a wooden dowel ___^_ This way the block sits inthe entrance but you cannot push it in too far.

    The instructions are "so important"? Your instructions don't match the video! If I need to drill, why not tell me what size of bit to use instead of using a cut off nail? The instructions tell me to attach the runners as the first step before any nailing. It's great you provide a video, but you could give measurements of where to nail. This video goes too quickly for a complete beginner to follow. It requires too much rewinding, pausing, watching AGAIN to make it easy. Both your instructions and your video could be greatly improved.

    • @ThorneBeehives
      @ThorneBeehives Рік тому

      Completetely take your point about the drill bit. We will try to update these videos over the next year. When we produced test videos the feedback was very much that people wanted to rewind and watch again (if they needed to) rather than watch a much slower video. Thank you for your comments.

      take notes before using the video in the shed. "4 nails in front 2 in back each side" is so mis-interpretable without attention you could end up with an iron maiden for your bees

    Make sure the box is square BEFORE banging too many nails in. Recheck periodically. Would be useful to know how proud the runner needs to be above the sidewall.

    One of my hives (a late-season split I bought in August) was getting totally hammered by the wasps until the HyfeGate came to the rescue. Although they are quite pricey for what they are, they work out better and are cheaper than hanging traps & buying bait, I highly recommend getting these and the metal plates. The bottom line is they really do work, and I will be buying more for my other hives this year. There is always room for improvement, so I would suggest being available in different colours, the periscope attachment would benefit from having attachment fitting like the metal plates quick release and if was just a couple centimetres taller it would also fit more hives with disc entrances, such as the Queen Rearing 8x Nuc from Hyde Hives.
